The Wesleyan Church is an evangelical, Protestant denomination. We offer the good news that faith in Jesus Christ makes possible a wonderful personal relationship with God, a holy life empowered by His Spirit for witness and service, and assurance of eternal life in heaven. Our name is in honor of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, whose emphasis on a life of faith, self-discipline, and perfect love is our example. There are nearly 5,000 Wesleyan churches and missions in over 70 nations worldwide. In the United States and Canada alone, there are approximately 1,700 local congregations. (Above info from www.wesleyan.org. © 2004) In a nutshell, here's what we believe: About the Bible: We believe that the Bible (Old and New Testaments) is the God-breathed Word of God, perfect in the original writings, and totally reliable in everything it addresses. It is the final authority for life, giving all the information necessary to know and love God, and to live a life pleasing to Him. About people: We believe that people are the highest creation of God on earth, and that He loves them above all else. We carry His image (moral will), and are equipped above all creation to do the will of God. We believe that all people are born with a sinful nature inherited from Adam, and that all people sin and fall short of the perfection required for entrance to heaven. Because of this, we deserve eternal punishment for our sins. We are incapable of saving ourselves through any effort on our own. About Jesus Christ: We believe that Jesus was the actual Son of God, who took human form in the form of a baby born of a virgin. He lived a perfectly sinless life, and was the only one qualified to be the final sacrifice for sins. He was crucified, died, and was buried. He rose bodily from the grave, and now sits at the right hand of God the Father. He is the only valid path to salvation, and no one can find forgiveness of sins and eternal life outside of Him. About getting to heaven: We believe that heaven is a physical place where the children of God will spend eternity. This heaven (and the forgiveness of sins that accompanies it) is available to all who call on Jesus, trusting in His work on the cross. Heaven cannot be earned either by good deeds or by the lack of evil deeds. It can only be obtained by faith in Christ. About the family of God: We believe that all who call on Jesus are part of the family of God, and that each member is responsible to God and each other. Therefore, we should each seek the good of the other, helping and encouraging one another in their living for God until we meet him face to face.
Well, there's plenty more, but these are the basics. We are in agreement with most evangelical churches in the above statements, though the wording may differ from group to group!
